The Halfpenny Press is a newsprint publication which visually responds to articles from The Manchester Guardian, celebrating the rich and colourful lives of the city's inhabitants 200 years ago. The importance of The Guardian as a socio-political archive is marked on its foundations. Founded in the wake of The Peterloo Massacre, The Guardian was regarded as the soul unbiased publication, accredited as much weight to the comment of friends as it did their enemies.

Bring in the old and New.

Finding a balance where traditional practices are enhanced by new technology can be difficult. With the Half Penny Press, I did not want to create just another newspaper. Instead, 200 year old stories were brought to life using VR, readers are encouraged to use their phones to animate the pictures on the page.

Paperboy Machine

The Paperboy is a machine mockup that would distribute illustrated tickets for “what happened on this day”. It would be used at library archive entrances as a way to interact with the public. Simply pull the one-armed bandit and a date and corresponding ticket will be generated.

Usher’s Circus

The Halfpenny Press features articles that represent the everyday occurrences of the people of Manchester. Each illustration is accompanied by the original, 200 year old article.
